I am setting up ubuntu 8.04 and have read the relevant threads. I have installed and reinstalled sun-java6-jre several times using Synaptic. I followed a suggestion to reinstall using sudo and the same program. sun-java6-jre appears among my installed programs. I installed openoffice.org-java-common as well and openoffice shows that as its jre. However; I have never been able to get www.java.com to detect my jre. (I don't care about Sun but no java applets run in the Firefox browser.) Firefox has Java enabled. The only thing I haven't tried yet is downloading and installing Sun's version, which is an rpm. I am not familiar with rpms and would prefer to rely on Synaptic. Before I do that, am I overlooking anything?
