I love my ubuntu and am totally Windows free but I miss Winamp. Could anyone suggest a music player that would be similar to Winamp?
Cheers

Amarok is probably the most similar to Winamp, and in my opinion, the best music player on Linux.

+1 even if it doesn't look like winamp. Amarok is often the reason I boot into Linux
Amarok ftw, it even has easy iPod support

Huh? Have you even looked at XMMS or Audacious? They're essentially Winamp 2 clones and you can use Winamp classic skins with them. I don't understand how Amarok is similar to Winamp at all.
Right now I'm using Amarok as well though. Unfortunatly, you have to install kdelibs, etc, but nothing manages my music better, and it's actually got an equalizer that works. I got sick of having to organize my music is giant playlists or adding the music each time with Audacious. If only Amarok were Gtk :(.

Amarok, because it works for me. (I like the graphic EQ also) Had some issues with XMMS on earlier builds, so have not checked it out recently.
Playlists are not an issue as I select from the nearly terabyte of music files I have and like to change things around a LOT. I will set up a few hours of stuff and let it play. Then set up a few hours more.
Audacious is also good, but I have wound up using that more for video capture than for audio.

xmms isn't actually in the hardy repos, but I'm sure there are ways of getting it to work; perhaps the version for gutsy works OK, I've not tried it. I am surprised, however, that no one has mentioned rhythmbox yet. OK it is not much like winamp, but then neither is amarok, so that is not a problem to many who seem to think that amarok is an alternative to winamp. Alternative, yes, but not at all like it, except that it plays music. I tried audacious, but for some reason could only get it to play single pieces of music, never any playlists. Perhaps that was just me, but I gave up and went back to rhythmbox which does everything, and more, that I want and need.

Here is a way to install xmms in Hardy http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4939942
I use Audacious though. RhythmBox is in by default, and works great for me as well.

well i installed and opened up all of these and I have to agree with this that Audacious is the most similar to Winamp. All the other ones are very similar. It seems like they copied each other. I just don't like how much of the screen they take up. Small, simple is better than large, complicated complex...for some reason i can't find XMMS in synaptic. when I search for XMMS in synaptic I get all the plugins but i can't find the one i need, hmm

As far as I know, XMMS was removed from the Ubuntu repos (I'm not using Ubuntu at the moment). XMMS is no longer maintained and uses gtk1. Audacious is a fork of XMMS and uses GTK2, so they're both very similar. However, some people think XMMS is still better than Audacious, so if you would like to use XMMS, you'll have to get a .deb.

I use audacious regularly, but have just "discovered" amarock.
For simple .mp3 playback I use audacious. It looks and acts like XMMS.
You can even use the XMMS/WinAmp skins if you like.

I usually use Frostwire's native player, however I do also use Amarok 2.0 BETA (not 1.x.x)

Check out the new Banshee-1 it's not the same as Banshee and it has an equalizer with it.

I became a rhythmbox user and I recommend it to anyone using gnome.
When I started using GNU/Linux, I was concentrated on finding the best applications, and this made me test some players, from quodlibet to mpd/sonata, passing through exaile, amarok, etc but, in the end, rhythmbox was the one who best fits my needs as it's full-featured and "light".

I started at rhythmbox, then went to exaile for a bit and have now settled on amarok.

Audacious... very nice, small and easy interface. I must say I was a winamp user before so switching to Audacious was a breeze.

MPD all the way. Combined withthe various GUIs and even desktop gadgets, you can listen to music without any window open! It can even be used from the CLI! :D

I love mpd; especially with Sonata (what a nice, clean interface!). I just wish it had an equalizer. :(

Yep. You have to download a client that controls it as well. I like sonata.
This is from the Arch wiki, but I found it to be a good guide for getting started with mpd:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mpd
Then, again, I'm not sure how well it applies to Ubuntu.

Except for installing, everything else works for me. You might need to compile a frontend depending on which one you decide to use though. :(

Amarok is nothing like Winamp. If that's what you want, go for Audacious.
I personally cannot move away from MPD + Sonata. Much as I try other stuff, I always end up with the classics.

I like Amarok, but I miss the crossfeed plugin available for Winamp (I use earphones). I can run Foobar through Wine, but it's not the greatest hit...
Does anyone know any natively-Linux player that has crossfeed available? (CrossFEED between left/right channels, not crossFADE between tracks)

Amarok, the king of music players. Accept no substitutes! :guitar:
I used Winamp when I was on Windoze, but Amarok is so nice that I decided to stick with it.

For a music player, device support is essential, anyone any ideas on which supports Creative Zen the best?

Normally MPD + GMPC. Currently I am mainly using cplay, though: a nice and simple audio player that does exactly what it should do (play music) and nothing more.

Banshee-1, but I can also recommend Rythmbox and Songbird.
I tried MPD+Sonata but couldn't even get it to import/generate my music library, so I ditched it pretty quick.
