GNU Backgammon Crashes From Launcher

I am running the Hardy, 8.04, release and have installed the gnubg package via Synaptic. The original package did not install a menu item for the game, so I added one. When I run the game from the launcher, the window's graphics are scrambled and it then crashes and the window goes away. When I run gnubg from the command line it works fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Launcher Type: Application
Launcher Command: /usr/games/gnubg

Output from uname:
Linux holmes 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 17:53:40 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Enter the Command as

gnubg -w

or change the Type to Application in Terminal.
