Hi all,

I would like to install ubuntu Linux but I don't know what to choose between KDE or Gnome. One thing I'm sure is that I don't want wait times in opening folders, messenger programm, browser and generally everyday use.

So which one you consider lighter and better for a beginner.

P.S. Please consider that KDE is coming with a new version in some time so I wouldn't like to face any problems.

Thanks in advance.

I would say Gnome is lighter, however if you want really light I would recommend openbox (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Openbox), fluxbox (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fluxbox), xnomad, or WMii. Those are just window managers, meaning they only manage windows. Gnome and Kde are bot GUI Desktops, with all the bells and whistles.

I would recommend Gnome, it feels lighter to me. But others will have different opinions.

KDE is somewhat more hardware demanding, so I think you'd be better off using Gnome.

I personally use and love kde, but I do think that gnome would be lighter and easier for beginners.

Thanks!What about XFCE?

It's very light, and it is a Desktop Environment.

If you still want to choose between only Gnome and KDE, I agree with the other posters, Gnome may be you best option.

KDE 3 feels pretty snappy at first, but it slows down. Gnome is more consistent.

None of them beat XFCE though! :guitar:

I recommend Xfce. It's far lighter than GNOME/KDE, but still offers a full desktop environment.

gnome can be tweaked to be lite.

you can swap gedit for leafpad
turn on reduced resource mode for metacity
lose the desktop background
use non-smooth fonts for the desktop
use lite and simple theme
disable compiz and aiglx
remove what ever you don't need
etc...

Well both KDE and GNOME are equally light. It's your call entirely. It also depends on the implementation. KDE implentation in PCLinuxOS is great, however in Kubuntu is poor. Similar GNOME is good in Ubuntu, but maybe not in another distro...

Try both.
