I used to have a panel on the left hand side of my desktop, which I have now removed. The desktop background has not resized to fill the space, which is now simply a panel-shaped bar of space which does not refresh (i.e. anything rendered there, such as windows, remains rendered until something else is rendered over it). The space is filled with black when you switch workspaces. Desktop icons cannot be placed in the space. Filling the space with another panel and removing or moving it does not help. This also happens with my top desktop panel, but not with the bottom one.
The above is with desktop effects on; with them off, the space is filled with the left-most part of the desktop background (i.e. it does refresh, but does not render correctly), though it still behaves as before in other respects.
This bug does not really have any functional drawbacks, but it is very annoying.
