I've been searching the forums and the web and I haven't got conclusive answers to a number of questions bothering me.

1. vlc 0.9.2 can playback AVCHD files and I've tried it on a c2d 1.8 laptop with 24mbs sample file from HF11 and It couldn't handle it. Has anyone played these 24mbs bitrate files and what's your configuration?

2. Does this also mean AVCHD support is a part of ffmpeg and all the video editing application dependent on it will support it soon?

3. Do Linux distros make use of grafic card's support for H.264 playback? I want to buy a laptop sometime in the future that could at least playback 24mbs files smoothly and if possible edit them without much problems. Is CPU the only factor here or should I be on the lookout for a good dedicated grafics too?

I have played 15mbs AVCHD video in the latest (repositry) version of VLC and it runs really well.

p.s. I'm running it on a 3.1GHz quad core if that helps.
