Cannot fix Update Manager

I get the following error when trying to run Update Manager:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I then run 'dpkg --configure -a' and get a segmentation fault. See below. Any help is appreciated:

in the terminal paste sudo dpkg --configure -a this should take care of it. I see it says root run this in the regular terminal sudo gives you root access for this command and others.

I think your using the wrong terminal use the one in accessories it looks like your using the root terminal. Using the rot terminal is not advisable unless you realy know what your doing and not applicable to the command your running.

I logged in with my regular account, tried the accessories terminal and got the same result. I was logged in with the root account before.

I am not sure that like the sudo usage if using the root terminal times out or you have to shut down the root access, hopefully somebody else will confirm your needs. If it was me I would just do a restart to make sure I started fresh with the correct terminal.

Ok so I reboot and login with my regular account and click on accessories - terminal and get the error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal". I can SSH in but I can't run the terminal from Gnome.

I have never figured out that ssh stuff, so I can't help there, in relation to your problem. What I can't figure out is it seems your trying to update through another computer rather than just using the one needing updates with a straight internet connection, is this correct?

Frank, I have tried this every way possible. I have been doing most of this in Gnome on the local machine. I tried SSH for the hell of it as a last resort.

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but hopefully a real geek will see the thread and help you, I am just a pseudo geek. Having a child process problem with the terminal is not anything I have ever encountered.

First get the latest package lists
sudo apt-get update

Remove any corrupt packages from your local apt cache
sudo apt-get clean

Then check that all dependancies are met with this
sudo apt-get check

if this returned dependancy problems then run
sudo apt-get install -f

Then run this to do all your updates
sudo apt-get upgrade

You should be good to go now, let us know if this worked.

If you run sudo apt-get autoremove then sudo apt-get autoclean this should clean the corrupted files then run the dpkg-a then the -f commands as listed in the previous posts then sudo apt-get update
then sudo apt-get upgrade.

Man, I am ready to throw this box across the room!!!! I still get the dpkg error after I went through all that. When I run the cp command, I get a segmentation fault.

When I run any basic command, I get a segmentation fault - ping, cp, etc. I had to copy the file through Gnome to complete the copy command but still no luck...

I really need to fix this as I have alot on the box that I would have to move if I have to reinstall. Pleeeeasseee help!

Ok, I am able to run the apt-get commands now after I removed files from the dpkg directories. So, I think I am making progress.. However, I still cannot run the last upgrade command but this might be a clue. I get a bunch of missing file errors. See the last error.

Segfaults on top of all of this means only one thing to me, ram issues. Restart your box and do a full ram test with the Ubuntu 8.04 CD. Check that and let us know.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will run the RAM test tonight.

You don't have to sell me on Ubuntu - I love it. The only frustrating part is that these type of problems are sometimes hard to solve.

It is an older box so it wouldn't surprise me if it was a RAM issue. I will let you know.

Ok, I ran the memory tests from the CD and everything passes. I think this has to do with the base packages being corrupted.

This happened after a power failure so I think something is corrupt. What now?

Ok, I am not sure what I did but I got the dpkg fix working. So I can now run updates and add and remove packages so thanks for the help!!

I am still getting a segmentation fault in gnome so I was thinking I could remove gnome and reinstall to clean it up. I have a feeling it has something to do with gnome.

Is there any way I can load without gnome and try ping and see if its related to gnome.

Well I am happy to report my installation is fixed!!!!

I uninstalled and reinstalled iptools-ping and some other tools and its all working now. Thank you so much for all the help!!!!
