View Full Version : [ubuntu] Sound Servers and Devices

I'm pretty new to linux and I am now down to one issue. Literally everything works apart from the sound.

I believe it is a fairly common problem so bear with me. Any links to guides will help enormously but I've tried so many things from forums which clearly aren't specific to my problem or are only specific to one application.

The 1st Problem:

Basically some applications can't use sound while others are running.

I would like to be able to use;

Amarok
aMSN
Virtualbox
Firefox
Mplayer
Kaffiene
Any programs which use sound basically, and hear them all. I have been told the key here is "pulseaudio" but I have no idea how to set it up so everything uses it.

The next and more major problem (for me):

Audacity wont playback on any device and there seem to be very few in the list which don't obviously associate to my modem. For recor beeringding the only devices are definitely part of my modem and wont work.

This may be an entirely different issue and if it is I apologise for the double post but I have a suspicion it is the same problem.

Any help would be very much appreciated, all the different sound servers have me stumped. I would even be grateful for a reason it's like this.

Thankyou for reading, I await in hope :)

PS: I have a Realtek HD audio card if that has any bearing on the issue
