I am very new when it comes to editing images and Paint.net I have found is very easy to use, Gimp however I have not found overly user friendly.

Can anyone reccomend any good software for a new starter?

Cheers

Nope, I usgest you buy a book on gimp from Amazon and follow the tutorials all over the net to get you used to gimp.

I think Krita would be the closest equivalent (I personally don't like it because it's not Gnome so it doesn't always run smoothly for me. But others have no problem with it at all).

Apparently some people are trying to port Paint.net to linux - http://tirania.org/blog/archive/2007/Dec-21.html - not sure how that's coming along though.
