Give me back my 20gigs.

Hi,

I am a newbie who tried to install ubuntu by just double clicking..

Since then I have learnt a few things and am very interested in getting ubuntu running.

However, firstly, I want to turn this;

back into a single vista partition, until I get a new hard drive.

I have the ubuntu live cd if that helps, the windows vista install dvd and a completly working computer (apart from missing about 22 gigabytes of space on my d drive - a 320gb western digital).

Can you help me?

You should be able to reclaim your missing spave by using Vista's disk management tools. No need to use other tools.

Vista's disk management doesn't seem to see it, however testdisk does see the 20gig.

Is there any other Vista based tool I could use?

You could use the livecd to do that, just format the partition you want in ntfs, then use the vistas disk management to do do with them whatever! :)

as far as I can tell there are no problems there, GiB is not the same thing as GB.

the reason ur 320 GB hard drive shows as 298 GiB is that 320 GB = 298 GiB

that's because in one Gigabyte, there are 1024 Megabytes. In one Megabyte there are 1024 Kilobytes and in one Kylobyte there are 1024 bytes.

while GB gives the number of bytes in your system, GiB gives the number Gigabytes. that is

298 GiB = 320 Gb = 320 x 10^9 bytes

320/(1.024^3)= 298

Windows just have the incorrect units

ubuntu live cd has the Gnome Partition Manager. It does not see the 20 missing gigs. Only 298, like Vista. I want it to see 320.

testdisk is the only one that seems to see it, but it is quite a challenging little program to master..

Its the same amount
A 320 gig HDD has 298 gigs of usable space. Google it and see why. Something to do with the way HDD companies measure compared to the actual OS
