Maybe I'm just dense but I'm rather perplexed as just how I should be using Bibus.

I've got my database set up. It integrates with OpenOffice. I can SEND a citation by selecting it in Bibus and hitting Ctrl+I but I'm at a loss as to how I just type the citation and then have Bibus pick it up, format and insert in the bibliography. From reading this section: http://bibus-biblio.sourceforge.net/bibus_doc/html/en/usingOOo.html#mozTocId241674 and looking at the screenshot it looked to me like I should be able to type my reference in square brackets "[]" and then have Bibus find the reference. I'm not succeeding at this. Always having to go to another program and find the reference (when I know the ID) is a waste of time. Surely there's a way around this?

As far as I know, using bibus requires switching focus back and forth between bibus and OOo. When I get to the point in Writer where the reference goes, I <ALT+TAB> over to Bibus, choose the reference (by typing the first letter of the author to get there quickly), <CCTRL+I>, then <ALT+TAB> back to Writer. Its a fairly efficient process once you get used to it. I've got 2 monitors in my office, and so I've always got bibus on the left and Writer on the right. It works quite well for me. I suggest trying it out for a little while before you give up. I used Bibus + OOo for my dissertation, and for 2 manuscripts so far (one for Weed Science, and one for Crop Science).

I don't believe there is a way to just type the ref in brackets and have Bibus search for the references. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me.

Well dang, still not as fast/easy as just typing the ID.

I was hoping it would be as easy as Latex.

Thanks.

I usually have about eight different windows open at once, PDFs, e-mail, webbrowser, etc. I use alt-tab pretty much exclusively, no task-bar or the like in my e17 environment. :D
