is it possible to have slightly transparent menu as in case of vista,i mean the list of apps that pop out on clicking the menu bar?

If you mean the Gnome Panels, right click on one and select properties. Here you select the Background tab, check the Solid Colour circle and use the slider to adjust the opacity.

you can get transparent menus using ubuntu tweak.

which can be downloaded and installed by going to the following link.

http://www.getdeb.net/release/2985

when installed open ubuntu tweak under application-system-ubuntu tweak.

then goto the desktop section and click compiz fusion there is an option in there.
