I have the PPC live CD of Ubuntu 7.04 and it will boot and I can use it, but I get the same black screen when I try boot the PPC live CD of 7.10. i Have also tried the latest version Hardy Heron
I get to the part where you can press enter or type 'live'. It even says try live videoonly or something like that, but that doesn't work for me either.
My PG4 will get past that screen, past a white screen, then sit on a black screen and the cdrom drive will eventually spin down.

On my Ibook G4 I had the same problem with the 7.10 and 8.04.1. When you restart to boot the disk as soon as you begin to see something come up press the tab key. This should bring up a page of options. At the bottom of the page there is a prompt. This is where if you type something you will see it. From the list of options you have to pick one and type it in exactly as you see it. With any capitals or spaces. Then you press enter. It has been a while since I installed so I may not remember the right one but I wrote down [Linux video=ofonly no splash]. I think that is the one you need to use. If it is not restart and get to the same point and try another option. This should bring you to a normal live disk interface.

It is normal to ask
1 How much ram do you have, I believe it takes 348 to install form the live disk.
2 Did you run a check on your disk burn? As I recall Mac checks the disk by default if you burned on the Mac.
If you don't have enough ram you can probably install with the alt. install disk. It takes less ram. I would think you should restart and use the programs on Ubuntu to see if everything works and you have internet connection before you try to start the install. A connection makes the install go better.
I did not think to say. If you have installed you might try the same method of hitting the tab key and look for a no splash type option to see if you can get to a desktop.

I have an iMac g3 400 DV that had the same problem with 7.10 and 8.04: I just installed 7.04 first, then updated, and finally system-upgraded 7.04 to 7.10. Then I updated 7.10, then system-upgraded to 8.04.1. This preserved my Xorg settings and it works great.
