Hi;

I have a mac-o-phile non-techie friend who is interested in trying Ubuntu. She has a G4. Will the Ubuntu livecd run on it?

She also has a macbook with a malfunctioning hard drive. She would like to retrieve her data before sending it to the factory to get it fixed.

Could we use an Ubuntu livecd ( I know nothing about Macs ) to rescue her data? How would I mount her macbook hard drive from the livcd? Would I be able to use the livcd while it is in her macbook to burn data with her cd burner?

From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ :

Which Macs are compatible with Ubuntu?
All NewWorld Macs should work. This means iMacs, iBooks, blue & white G3s, Lombard G3 PowerBooks and newer. The minimum system requirements are 256 MB of RAM and 3 GB of hard disk space. Users with less RAM or disk space may try Xubuntu.

Currently as of Feisty for iBooks/Powerbooks sleep, wireless, and external display are all supported with models having ATI graphics. Owners of the 12" Powerbook G4 models with the Nvidia graphics chip: sleep is not possible, because of insufficient hardware information from Nvidia.

Is Ubuntu still available on PowerPC?

Yes, see PowerPCDownloads (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads)for downloads.

Hope this helps!

Grace and Peace,
Tim

Well, I've been a Mac'er since day one. I was number 4 to take delivery in Broward county back in Feb 1984, so I am very biased as to whether or not to use Mac over Windoz. I do have 11 distro's of Linux running on vm's on my iMac as well as Windoz XP Pro and my G4 Digital Audio Mac has MacOS10.4.11, Ubuntu, Debian, openSuse,and Fedora on 5 drives. One thing is for certain, I'm definitely devoted to Linux/Unix of which MacOS is a member (Darwin BSD).

Hi,

I just wanted to ask if you or your friend had access to a second PPC Mac with a Firewire plug (IEEE 1394)?

Since on a Mac you can use what is called Firewire target disc mode to make one Mac show up as a hardrive on another Mac. (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661) This would let you make her disabled computer be a hard drive and let the working computer copy & past her information to the other computer temporarily and then maybe burn to a CD / DVD.

Hope this helps in case the Ubuntu live disc does not do the trick.
