My HP Pavilion dv6000 recently stopped recognizing the DVD drive when I was using ubuntu.

I've had ubuntu 8.04 for months but I believe it was the first time I tried playing a DVD. At first it said something along the lines of not being able to mount or read the disc, I don't quite remember.
I rebooted and when I tried again the DVD drive was no longer there.
I then booted into Vista and it is no longer recognized there either. It doesn't show up in My Computer.

By the way I'm pretty new to linux. I took a look through some similar threads but I wanted to know for sure I was getting the right solution.

thanks in advance

Sounds like the drive is hosed, or could be loose or bad cable between mb and drive.

I don't think that's it, I had been watching the same DVD in Vista hours before.
