View Full Version : [ubuntu] Recommend a good usb drive for installing ubuntu

I'd like to install ubuntu on a usb drive I can plug in to computers and boot from. I'm having trouble finding a drive that both reads and writes reasonably fast though, most of the stuff I've found does one or the other poorly. Can anyone recommend a high speed read and write usb drive in the 4-16Gb range? Price is not really an issue, but I'm not looking for a solid state drive either.

OCZ USB Rally2 Turbo 4GB

It reads at 35 Mb/s and writes at 30 Mb/s

Above 4Gb will restrict the writing speed to a maximum of 15 Mb/s...

I have bricked two Transcend usb drives and one GXT drive running Ubuntu.
Kingston seems reliable but does not have very fast read /write speeds.
If you have lots of ram read / write speed is not that big a deal for normal operation.
I've also heard that OCZ is quick, expensive and limited to 4G, but I guess you could stick your home folder on a second drive.
