I'm a bit of a noob, so please forgive me it this is a bit stupid!

I've just installed 8.04.1 on a five year old Dell 500m which basically still works. There's some basic details from an old Cnet review below.

Windows XP Home; 1.4GHz Intel Pentium M; 256MB DDR SDRAM 266MHz; Intel 82852/82855 Graphics Controller-0 (up to 64MB-shared); Hitachi DK23EA-30 30GB 4,200rpm.

It's all good, except that sometimes on start up and always with decent resolution MP4s and DVDs, the screen just dies and doesn't seem to want to be brought back to life. I've read some stuff about doing dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and choosing VESA but as with others, I've found this seems to have been disabled for the new version. I've then gone to displayconfig-gtk which is picking Plug & Play at 1024 x 768 at 60Hz by default.

Has anyone got any ideas here? Some help would be great!
