Can someone suggest some good free and nonfree games for linux? Also, if anyone knows away to get steam or Star Wars Galaxies to work under linux, please tell me. when I try with wine, they appear to be unable to connect to the internet.

Here's something I found in the archives:

There are some cool First Person Shooter games that are in the repository, those are:

- Tremulous (http://tremulous.net/): Found in Multiverse Repository

- OpenArena (http://openarena.ws/): Found in Universe repository

- Nexuiz: (http://alientrap.org/nexuiz/) Found in Universe Repository

- AssaultCube (http://assault.cubers.net/): NOT found in the repository, it can be installed from source or from GetDeb.com (http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=AssaultCube)

Also, CS and some other games work under Ubuntu using wine:

installing wine
sudo apt-get install wine

installing CSS
wine /media/cdrom0/csssetup.exe

The most game in a box and the most bang for your buck is Neverwinter Nights Platinum for a mere $20. There is a free Linux client on the Bioware site and the best instructions I have found (sorry, Linux forum) for installing it there. You won't have the movies unless you try something like this:

You can download tons of modules (each of which is an adventure) from Neverwinter Vault and play and play.

There is a game called netPanzer which is probably the most addictive linux game I've ever played. It's an RTS game with no resource management.

Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe is a great buisness game you can find it in Ubuntu's add/remove programs (Open TTD) - its only got 3 stars in popularity but it deserves 5.

In order to run it, you will need some files from the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe:

/usr/share/openttd/data/ - put in all the .grf data files
/usr/share/openttd/gm/ - put in all the .gm music files

I only have one free game that I enjoy:
Frets on Fire - If you play the latest mods, the game is amazing!

As for paid games:
The current "best" as in shiny, new game is prob. Quake Wars Enemy territory. When UT3 gets released, we can add that to the list. A lot of people also like Eve online and Savage 2.
So, those are a few games from this current generation. If you want to jump back a bit, we've got doom3, ut2004, Neverwinter nights and a few more. Neverwinter nights is a great game that doesnt get its fair share of due (even though its trumpeted so much as a linux game). Its big, huge even, and user created content makes it that much bigger. It's deep, like D&D deep. There is a lot to do and explore, once you start playing, you want to try out other character classes and do things in a different way. It also can be played online, so you can either play cooperatively with your friends, or join a persistant world, and have basically an MMO. Sure, the game is old, and the graphics are dated, but its an isometric view (similar to diablo) so you can get away with weaker graphics than you could with a fps.

Billard-GL - Pool game
Enemy Territory - FPS
Extreme Tux Racer - Penguin sliding down a hill
FlightGear - Flight Simulator
OpenTTD - Transport Tycoon like (Need original game)
SuperTux2 - Super Mario like
SuperTuxKart - Mario Kart like
TORCS - Racing cars

That's about it as far as I know

Also: Lot's of Windows games work under WINE, just have to experiment a bit.

Check out some of these too: http://www.getdeb.net/category.php?id=3

Might be a little sad on my part, but my favorite linux game so far.. well, after a year.. XD ..is still the simple little Mahjongg game that came bundled with my ubuntu <3 Relaxes me soo much, and my nephew and I keep trying to beat each others' scores :)
((though my opinion might change in a day or two, finally, if I can get WoW up and runnin...))
