I have heard a lot of mixed things about Ubuntu 8.04. I hear a lot of people have trouble with Ubuntu 8.04, but then I hear that a lot of people have a great experience with Ubuntu 8.04 these problems based on what I have read seem to be related to the system hardware. I would really like to use Ubuntu 8.04, but I don't know how to figure out if it will work well with my laptop or not. I have a single core 2ghz processor and 1 gig of ram.

Should work fine, but you should post more specs. What graphics? That's what give the most trouble. What brand? Certain brands have non-standard / sub-standard ACPI implementations (especially on laptops) which is another root (yes, root, not route) for trouble.

As a first step, check it with a live CD, and post back your impressions. The live CD will let you use ubuntu without the need to install it.
