Hi,

I'm a professional freelance webdesigner, and I've recently made the switch to Ubuntu. I've been wanting to do it for a long time, because I love open source, but I've been hesitant because I wasn't sure I could live without all the Macromedia/Adobe stuff I've been do dependent on.

So far things are looking bright though. I'm getting familiar with Gimp, and all my hardware has been supported so far.

However, I guess I'll have to buy a copy of Crossover Office to get Flash up and running. I don't mind, as long as it performs good, though.

I would love to hear from some webdesigners who are using Ubuntu to do their work.

What are your experiences - which applications are you using?
Are you dual-booting to use Flash mx, or does Crossover do the job?
Do you feel that Ubuntu overall is up to the task?

Thanks in advance!

I am not too much of a proffesional web designer but use alot of their products and I can tell you that flash is really the only thing that was needed everything else you can get similart or better programs if you are buying a copy of crossover you might as well use photshop because the gimp is just doesn't have all the features. you can look at nvu, bluefish and quanta for editors.

macromedia mx (not mx 2004) works greta with cxoffice 4.1, 4.2, and i assume 5.0... i've used it for months, and hardly found any problems

sounds good, I'll get me Crossover then. :)

I thought Gimp was almost as good as Photoshop - in which way is it lacking?

i don't know if it really matter to you but I do arcitectural vizulaization and I can get dome formats to work propely in the gimp. I mean the lack of 6 bit or higher. but that probably does not matter too much if you are only doing web design. I mean it lackng on higher end stuff but now that I think about it it is more than enough for webdesigning issues.

Why not try wine? I do not know if all the windows apps you need work in wine but I know at least photoshop does.

i tested it with the trial today, and all the Suite MX apps work great in cxoffice 5, considerably faster than 4.x (i mean alot)
