What's the done thing here - should I thank a post for being humorous? Or do people prefer thanks being reserved for helpful posts?

This is a feature intended to give recognition to helpful posts and users, not a popularity contest.

If no one minds, I'm going to go ahead and thank the funnies.

You can thank anything that is appreciated. However, it is not recommended to thank every single post in a thread, or thank any post. Think of it as saying it in person. You don't want to dilute its meaning.

Just out of curiosity, LaRoza, have you never found anyone else's posts to be helpful? I'm just wondering how it is you have almost 14,000 posts, and yet you've only thanked one other post.

I'm of the same mind; but sometimes, some forum admins remove thanks given to their (own) posts unless the thanks is well-deserved, ie, not for the funnies.

Overall, I guess the preference is not to thank the funnies, but I say, "to each his own".

That one thanks is an error. I can't find that post and don't remember doing it. It may be I thanked a spammer before banning...

(The spam ban button is right next to the thank you)

In my considered opinion, people should feel free to thank any post they either benefited from or enjoyed.

Thanks can mean, "That was helpful and appreciated," or "I really needed to laugh." Either could be appropriate.

Asking for thanks is more of a problem than giving them. I would rather people be profuse in their praise of others than stingy.

What about accidental thanks? That poor spammer...

Um... how about, "Thanks for providing such a bad example of forum behavior?" (said to the spammer)

But it was an accident. Could it be removed manually from my profile? I don't want to give a false thanks.

ahoy!

to this day I find abusive thanks, disgusting..

in my pirated opinion, thanks profile should be blotted out.

But it was an accident. Could it be removed manually from my profile? I don't want to give a false thanks.I found a way to remove all thanks given by a specific user. Since you only had the one, I ran it on your account. Next time the database maintenance is run and it updates itself, the thanks you gave should disappear. This is not something I want to play with, so I won't likely be doing it again for anyone...just in case anyone had any ideas...but I didn't mind testing the feature on LaRoza's account. ;)
