Has it????
i installed ubuntu on my mums laptop MONTHS a go , and unlike my computer everything she has, was working right out of the box, wifi, sound etc.
yet i asked her today and she hasnt touched it, well she has, she said "i went into the thing but i didnt know how to do anything on it, besides i had to do some work that i brought home, and i could only do it in microsoft word and excel"
you and i both know open office can handle that stuff, but she wasnt even willing to figure out (on her own) if those file types were compatible in linux, forums are arent something she even knows about, and they dont teach linux in schools.
This brought me to think of something, windows has become the default, people have already learned one operating system and arent willing to learn another.
I told her she could do everything on windows (that she does) on linux, however she replied with
her: so i can do everything on windows in linx
me: yes, thats why i installed it as a second option on your computer
her:but i dont understand linux im going to have to learn it
me: of course, its new to you.
her: is there a reason i should learn it..... i mean, does it do anything that windows cant do .
me:..................
Linux does a lot of things, (a LOT) but for your average mum i dont think it does anything worth learning a new system for. It just does what windows does, and since she already knows windows she decided she would stick with that.
i Mean it does make sense, that if your gonna learn something new, your gonna want it to do something new, if it doesent then your not gonna want to learn it.
i dont know....... what do you think, has windows already won? or will linux be able to do something new, that windows cannot for the average mum/user. because whether she's a super user or not she still makes up the numbers which give microsoft so much power.
