View Full Version : KDE4 -- can these things be done?

I've been experimenting with Intrepid with KDE4 on my old laptop (so I'm not going to even consider performance issues). But there are a number of things I'd like to be able to do and haven't yet figured them out, so I wondered if anyone else knows?

1) Moving the launcher/taskbar to the top of the screen (I really dislike taskbars and launchers at the bottom -- I'd switch to XFCE before using a taskbar at the bottom).

2) Different wallpapers on different desktops.

3) Changing the colour of the taskbar from the default black, much too gloomy. (I've not yet looked very hard for that one).

1) There's a little button on the far right of the panel that allows settings to be changed....the "paragraph format" style pop-out that appears can be dragged to whatever position on the screen.

2) I don't know, but I don't think that they've yet implemented that in plasma.

3) If you right click on the desktop and go to the normal "Wallpaper-changing" dialog, there are plasma themes at the bottom. "Aya" should be a pretty light-colored theme.....

1. unlock widgets, right click panel, panel settings and then drag it to the position you want.

2. Will be in 4.2

3. what fracturedmorals said and if you pick Aya theme then it also folow your system colors you use. http://kde-look.org/index.php?xsortmode=high&logpage=0&xcontentmode=76&page=0 if you want to screenshots of the themes

Thanks guys, those worked, though I'd have to say that the panel relocation is a far from obvious process.

As a KDE user since Alpha 0.12 (well over a decade ago) the various 4.x versions are the first time I've not felt comfortable with a KDE release.

The first time i used the panel setup i also was confused but now i understand it beter. it gives me more to control like the shrink grow lengt of the bar if there more applications open. You can even put a 2 panels on the bottem one on the right side and other one on the left side in kde3 it wasn't possible . Still it needs more options like multirows , beter pager.
