View Full Version : [SOLVED] Open Arena Update?

I just installed OpenArena via the Synaptic Package Manager and it happened to install the older version.

I've been wanting to play 0.8.0, but I can't seem to find a sensible way of updating it.

Also - and this may seem like a silly question - but I downloaded the 0.7.7 update only... I don't know where to put the files...

I'm fairly new to Ubuntu (once a Windows XP gamer) and I got too used to opening everything via C drive, Program Files, etc. With Ubuntu, I don't know where ANYTHING is. It took me three hours to find where my .wine folder was located...

That being said: "Lamer noob instructions" are appreciated.

Ubuntu doesn't believe it's important enough to keep games updated. Just uninstall the version from the repositories and get it directly: http://openarena.ws/files.html

It has a Linux binary included that you can simply double-click.

Or an easier and generally better way would be to add the Playdeb repo and get it from there. http://www.playdeb.net/

Playdeb is exactly what you need here. It keeps the games updated

Thanks for the quick responses! I honestly didn't know that such a ting as Playdeb existed. You've all saved me from many future headaches.

Thanks again.

It's actually added to the sticky Ubuntu Gaming Information Site - [UPDATED: Sep 08 2008] (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=359842)

Hi, I installed Openarena 0.7.7 from the Intrepid repository, then I came across this very useful post and installed playdeb (meaning I added the playdeb repository). The problem is no updates come up for the game, even though I have reloaded package information. Am I doing something wrong? I hope I don't have to uninstall and reinstall the game, as it requires a (somewhat) lengthy download. After all, the whole point was to update rather than reinstall :)

OpenArena isn't updated in playdeb for ubuntu 8.10 yet unfortunately. Too much stuff needs to be packaged in a too short of a time :(
