Wow, DR-DOS, haven't seen my favorite DOS in years....

but it seems your are booting a floppy disk.
that's what the a:> is saying,,,

If the lappie is old enough to have a floppy drive, make sure there is no diskette inserted.

And can you give us any information on the lappie?

Model, make, cpu, how much memory, hard drive size...

Boot the laptop normally.
Insert the Ubuntu CD.
Open the CD using Windows Explorer once it's spun up and take a look at what is on the CD.

Do you see one file on the CD ending with the file extension .iso, or do you see numerous files and a few folders on the CD?

Hi,

When you burned the CD in Nero did you choose the option to burn the image file, or did you (as I suspect) choose the option to create a bootable CD?

Has the laptop got Windows on it? Can you boot up Windows and send us a file listing of what is on the CD?

Do Not burn as a "boot CD" that is the problem...

Burn as an "image' or "disc image" That is an option with NERO I just did that yesterday, successfully.

Good Luck!

you made the CD wrong, in Nero pick ISO cd, then everything should work

You may not have written the ubuntu iso to the disc correctly to learn how to do this have a look at this link.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

And download the free Infra Recorder to install on your windows install then burn the cd/dvd using it and all should be well.
