Trying for hours to install a tar.gz theme

I have been reading thread after thread and cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've downloaded a theme, extracted it (I think) and tried to drag in into the themes window and it keeps giving me an error. "rockin-all-nite does not appear to be a valid theme" I am a fresh newbie to Ubuntu so please take baby steps with me. I've used the tar -zxvf and I think that that means I extraced it. To add to it, Im really confused about this whole ./configure...make....make install. Anybody who can help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Don't bother extracting it, just drag the .tar.gz file across to the theme window

It would help if you had the link to what exactly it is you downloaded.

Is it an emerald desktop theme ?

If so, import the (uncompressed) file into emerald.

If it's just a theme from somewhere like Gnome-Art or Gnome-Look, yeah, just drag and drop into the theme manager (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuEyeCandy). One of those things: easy when you know how.

I have also tried to just drag the tar.gz file into the themes window and still getting the same error.

Thats a login theme. You need to use system>admin>login window

That is a login window theme, are you dragging it to the login window preferences dialog?
