I would like to boot and run a trial of suse from my external hard drive. I run Windows and Ubuntu Hardy on my main HD and would also consider triple booting Windows/Ubuntu/ Suse but I think that it may be safer to keep Suse separate.

Is this easy to do, or even possible.

Its Possible,

I use to that in class, matter fact it was mandatory project to triple boot with windows, mandrake, and redhat. (ya i said mandrake not mandriva, been awhile since i was in school), lol

although, I dont remember it being easy, but things have changed alot since then, so maybe it is easy now. But it is very possible.

You just have to edit you device.map and set your hard drive in menu.lst (both in /boot/grub)

I'm not exactly a newbie but I'm not too technical either. Can you explain how I follow your advice map instructions?
