This is modeled on the same principles the open source community works.
A lot of people agree that the education system needs a swift kick in the kazoo. The Open Source community is great and should be expanded to Education Software. Not to do away with the current system, but expand on it. I'd like to suggest a free open education system. a free online K-12 School, later Community College and Eventually University.
Why not make an open source client that you can create a profile, download from a list of and peer-created packages containing assessment tests to test your knowledge and suggest other peer-created packages containing course materials prepared by the authors(teachers) including all required multimedia, assignments, quizzes, review, tests, finals, scoring, grading, certificate, help documents, and channels for irc study groups. On top of that peers should be able to rate all packages as good/bad and leave comments. Another set of peer-created packages attempt to advise other peers what course packages to download to get into the field they want. Another key innovation for this would be the eventual implementation of a course-help, study-group and student-budget community comprising of irc and discussion forums to aid peers in all areas of education development to the extent of helping them organize hands-on projects with local peers with their own money at cost. This would be so that within each package you can subscribe to a study group and join the rest of the class of your choice in discussing and interpreting the course. After completing the course just open up your certificate and print. labs and such activity's are a problem, but with a peer network someone is bound to solve it and post a how-to package for every field sooner or later.
Obviously this project can get really complex really fast, however at the same time it's basic principles are quite simple and wouldn't be too hard to get a simple alpha version out there in less than a year. As all die hard linux users know persistence pays off in the end. How cool would it be to be everyone/anyone, anywhere in the world, and with a free download of ubuntu go Applications>Education>LiveEducation and go earn a degree or certification for free and do labs at cost to you on your own time? I realize there's more to career planning than this, but there's also people out there, unsung heroes, who can do it better. Even if it took a decade for other schools, employers, and government to recognize free open education system as a valid and comparable to any local high school, community college, university, or other private school. Would that not be worth it in the end?
