Something strange has happened to the keyboard on my my mum's ubuntu laptop, when ever i press some of the letters. They come out as numbers
l=3
n=4
And others, it makes typing words impossible. I haven't changed anything under keyboard in the main menu, and i tried pressing restore to defaults. It didn't work

Some laptops have a numeric pad built-in the keyboard. It's activated by some (varying) combination of Fn, NumLock, and more hocus pocus depending on the laptop. That thing wouldn't be on, would it ?
Just checking.

thats what it sounds like, you have the number pad enabled,
m=0
j=1
k=2
l=3 and so on and so correct?

As people have said: try turning off Numlock. Or maybe your Fn key is stuck down. But try the former first.

On my Dell Latitude C400 (old :)) numlock is Fn+F4. *shrug*

Yes, that could very well be it, i was trying to adjust the screen brightness earlier, and i was pressing some of those combinations, mainly Fn, and F4-F9. Any idea what combination it could be?
The laptop is an aspire 4920,
edit fixed it, thanks very much :)

If you look at the Fxx keys, one might say numlock. Does one? Or it might have a dedicated key?

Thank you guys!
My mother had this very problem. The cat was to blame - it walked over her keyboard.... pressed numlock.
Thanks.
