Very useful info. Thank you for sharing. If you are in the market for a new computer please consider buying one with Ubuntu or your favorite flavor of Linux preloaded. It has the advantage of all your hardware working. It also helps to make it profitable for companies to offer computers with Linux preloaded.

I love the Dell laptop that I purchased with Ubuntu 8.04 preloaded.

J&N Computer Services, Fairport N.Y., should be added to list B. They are on the web as jncs.com. I have ordered four computers from them over the last 8 (?) years. They are reliable and they take good care of their customers. Safe people with whom to deal in my experience.

BTW, my daughter is still using the first computer they built for me because, as she explains, it is the "always works" machine.

That is not correct. Free in GNU/Linux terms means personal freedom, not no cost.

It is perfectly legal to sell GNU/Linux and make money from selling it.

I just bought a Dell XPS M1530, with the upgraded processor and LED screen. I have very high hopes for Ubuntu, and this will be my first time using it. I am also really excited to learn how to use it to its full potential.

My thinking is that I'm gonna start buying used laptops that are P4's or older, load up Linux in one form or another (shucks, I may make it up to the buyer), and sell them to make some extra cash. Alot of people have old laptops that they think are "useless" but really, they're only useless because they run the system hog M$ Windows XP (and they want Vista or something crazier: a Mac).

For what most PC users use their PC's for 90% of the time (surfin' the net!), a P3 or Celeron can run fine, as long as it has Linux runnin' on it. Far fewer problems, and easier to diagnose the problems if ever there are any.

I for one would be interested to here how you get on as I am looking to upgrade and promised myself I would buy a non windows pc if I could ...got a quote for the inspiron 530 but have heard mixed views on the dell machines and support is 'patchy'

Just buy a new laptop, exchange the hard drive with a new one, ubuntu on it, and viola you have ubuntu laptop. You can always reinstall the original hd if you wish. The fun is in getting it all setup, when you buy a preconfigured unit you are limiting yourself plus missing out on the experience of setting it up.

That's exactly why preinstalled Ubuntu computers are needed. For most people, the experience of setting Ubuntu up is more of a headache than it is worth - no matter how easy it is.

that's true. If it weren't for the fact that Vista used to hog up all my resources, used to take eons to boot up, and cost $300, I would never have considered Ubuntu. Plus I still have a few problems (sd card and internal mic)

You know what would be nice, if Windows was open source and offered separate functional packs for users with specific needs...I'd jump on that. It would be better to have a Windows OS (bare bones, no bloat ware) - and only purchase the software you'll actually use or want. I never liked doing re-installs to remove the garbage. MS could arguably earn more from separate package bundles than forcing consumers to spend $300-400 at once.

I have no problem bringing it up with Epiphany on Intrepid Ibex. I wonder if there is a connection problem. Have you tried since to get it?

the computers cost a ton less and there's no fee I think on "linux" if there is any profit margin from having linux vs windows on it they probably attribute it to support and having it installed in the first place. So the linux bit is still free, but there's no law about making profit on service, that's like half of IBM's linux strategy, service and support
