Boot to muted sound

Everytime I boot up, the volume control is set to mute. I only get sound by manually turning the volume back up. Any ideas? I am running on an ATI HDA with Alsamixer.

1/ double click speaker icon
2/ Edit menu
3/ Preferences - make sure you have ticks in the appropriate places

Close and reboot. How did you go?

Still didn't keep the settings through a reboot.
