I'm looking to buy a mp3 player and I want to know which one might fit the following:

1.Not an ipod.

2.No management software needed(i.e. an itunes like program).

3.The file management program treats the player like a flash dive. It opens a window for it and i just have to drag/drop files from my music folder into it.

4.I can plug it into someone else's computer and then drag/drop music onto their hard drive.

This one sound like it might fit the bill but I don't know if it will work with linux.

Any USB "Mass Storage Device" (UMS) MP3 player will do. Almost anything apart from a Zune or an iPod will do that these days.

The challenge is finding an MP3 player that will let you upgrade the firmware through Linux.

This store lists MP3 players supported by Linux.

I've had good luck with the Sansa Clip, but I haven't tried enough players to say it's "the best."
