I have a monitor and graphics card capable of giving graphics of 1280 X 800 but for some reason I can't get my desktop resolution that high. Any ideas?

Hi and what is the model of the graphics card ? Have you tried using the command
gksu displayconfig-gtk and adjusting the resolution.

but i still don't get the resolution I need.

Specs (sorry forgot these)

AMD turion tl 60
2 gbs ram
ati xpress 1150 or xpress 200m Not sure exactly.
