i messed around with linux awhile ago and im gettin back into it now.
on my computer now i basically do two things
Play team fortress classic, and use mirc.
I figure linux should be able to handle all of that but i have a few questions
awhile ago when i wanted to install steam i had to get this stupid transgamin thing which cost money.
my copy of half life is bought perfectly legally and i hope i will be able to just give a cd key and dl steam for linux.
can someone explain to me or just warn me what im going to have to do, or if it will even work?

AFAIK there is no native linux port of steam.
You will have to use transgamings cedega (winex). The latest has been compiled specifically for steam.

No but supporting them is a good thing.

and you need something like a minimum of 3 months, either way, not too expensive.

you can also compile cedega via cvs for free.

and keep in mind, steam and cedega are completely different birds altogether, made from two different companies. Just because you didn't have to pay for one doesn't mean you won't have to pay for another.

Presumably someone could download, compile and redistribute a free binary of cedega? It is based on wine, isn't it? Which is gpl, right?
Or if not that, then maybe a source-code-package. I know its nice to support the guys for doing good work, etc. But it bugs me to have to pay money for software.

the cvs tree does not contain some stuff, like copy protection routines, because of copyright.

there's a thread somewhere on the forum where someone was distributing the cvs tree compiled and packaged, but I think the site went down. It may be back up though, you can try. It's a post in the gaming forum, so you might have to go back a couple pages but it's there.
It's not like they're asking for much though dude. You pay for games don't you? That IS a form of software. Cedega just happens to be made by seasoned game developers who really know their stuff, so shouldn't they be rewarded in the same way Valve or iD should be? The people who write Cedega aren't doing it as a hobby-- it's their paycheck, it's their kids' dinners tonight. If they were charging more than they are I'd complain too, but it's REALLY cheap.

not any harder than that no, you need to grab the cvs tree first, but that's not too advanced either ;)

and that's why I pay for it. That's a good philosophy if you like a piece of a software support those who made/make it, so in the future that piece of software will still exist. 'Transgaming technologies' often update their software so it's worth it to support them, plus you'll get a nice gui called Point2Play for easy setup, plus you'll get the rights to vote which games they should make working on Cedega.

if you get the free cvs version of cedega it won't work with most games that have cd keys unless you get yourself a no-cd crack due to the copyright that they can't give out the source to. if you want to be able to play legit games and not need a no cd crack you do need the payed version

btw, steam works just fine with plain wine, just add the tahoma.ttf font to the windows/font/ directory. no need to pay for cedega (I don't have a problem with paying for cedega, it's just it seems wine runs steam better than cedega does).

Why o why do people have to necromancing dust ancient threads from the deepest part of our tomb?
