mobo and processor upgrade question

im thinking of upgrading the mobo and processor in a spare dell xps t500 box i have. im gonna be upgrading to a AMD compataible mobo and a quad core AMD processor. my question is will the upgrade of hardware effect the OS and data on my harddrives??

there is a possibility that it will but i'm not sure.......
i know in widows that it does but i'm not sure about ubuntu

i thougtht that there was a possiablilty that id have to do a fresh install...didnt wanna have to do that and lose all the data and saved files but if i have to then so be it
