Hi to everyone here at the forum.

I'd like to bring to your attention, a website which donates free rice to those out there who are starving. At the same time, you can learn new words and improve your vocabulary. You can get all the information you need on their website. They'll explain how they can afford to donate free rice. Please read their FAQs if you have doubt.

So, if you have some free time, please go to http://www.freerice.com (http://www.freerice.com/) and do some good. You can post cropped screenshots of how many grains (or bowls) of rice you've donated each time you play.

The first time you play, the words might be easy. But it gets harder once you level-up. Remember to have fun also!
EDIT: There are other languages: French, German, Italian, and Spanish. There are several different subjects as well - grammar learning, Art, Chemistry, Geography and Math. Click on "Change Subjects".

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with the organization whatsoever. I just stumbled upon them and want to spread the word.

Nebula is an astrology word: "a faint, cloudlike, self-luminous mass of matter situated beyond the solar system among the stars." - Dictionary in Ubuntu

Thanks for bringing this up, I had forgotten it..No problem!:)

just FYI the creator of that site makes quite a bit of money, of which he probably keeps most.

someone has worked out the economics/finances behind the site. you could probably help out the world's poor more by actually doing something productive with your time.

hate to be cynical but its just reality.

I used to play until someone told me that I was selfish for not faking I didn't know words and then collecting a bunch of rice for the poor. I guess it's time to move on and start playing again.

How much rice is a meal?
It's answered in the FAQs. You gotta scroll down quite a bit though. Look for "How much rice does it take to feed a person for a day?"

god0fgod
September 13th, 2008, 07:34 PM
I think I saw 400. So I've fed 10 people for today.

You guys do realize if you just donate money to charity you will be helping people a lot more. I think the real thing here is learning vocabulary, while making you feel good inside. But its really no help compared to what we could be doing... sigh.

How much rice is a meal?

400 grams of rice per person, per day ... 48 grains of rice in a gram
So 19,200 grains per person per day.

Now somebody just needs to write a program to do this all day. It's the charitable thing to do. :p

You would need one that loads the ads and that picks the right answers.

Picking the right answer.... it's pretty easy to do in the math section. It's only multiplication. I feel tempted to try to write a program to play it all day.

Wow, thanks for letting me know there was a math section!

Now I can win free rice like a pro!

in my native language, "nebulos" (closely related to "nebula") means unclear; but I think that the word "nebulous" exists in English too
level 15 so far :D

Come to think of it, so it does in my language. It's a bit like 'foggy' in English. It derives from 'fog' but means (mentally) not clear.

Wait a minute, it means something in my language too.. but it's a sentence meaning "Is it sunny?" Weird huh?

I don't think you should write a program to play it automatically, because they ask in the FAQ not to do that, they say the server would overload :(

lukjad007

Plus, the ads are what runs the place so they may not get paid.

I just reached 1020 and it went back to zero! Oh well, I'm sleepy anyway.
gnome=dwarf (lvl 10) ;)
I used to play around lvl 20 but today, I intentionally went down to level 8 or so (to donate more quickly - or so I thought) and there are some words I have never even heard of! It's a good way to learn new words.

edit: 840 more. :)

This is pretty fun for me as a swede. It really lets me put my English to the test.

I'm at 2540 grains of rice. Level 36. I would keep playing, but it's late and I really, really need my beauty sleep.

I wanted to see what it would look like after I'd reached 10,000. I got up to 8,160 and it got reseted! :(
I played this last night and continued this morning, so it's a combined amount of rice. I fed a hungry person :) ..I think.

Well... reading the FAQ, it says the ads at the bottom of the page are what pay for the rice. Since I got Adblock, plus Mike's Hosts File (google it), I never ever ever ever see ads, so I guess I'm out...

But wow is that game fun! :D I might keep playing anyway :D

lifestream, you could make freerice.com an exception, can't you? That is, if you're going to play anyway, why not help someone along the way? :D

This deserves a bump. =]

Havin' a lot of fun with this. I wonder if this can be counted as community service?
