Hi,I have been fiddling again, unfortunately, and have come across and error:-

Could not initialise the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Type ‘gksudo’ is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.'

There is a red circle with white line through it next to the network icon, and the same eorr occures when I try to open the Synaptic Package Manager.

How do I get around this,

Thank you.

John.

I think this might be connected to my other problem, with file management, I wonder if somebody could help, me via remote assistance. Would that be possibe?

Sorry to have to ask.

Somehow your sources.list file has aquired some extra text at the start that we dont want and is confusing the package manager, we can take this out easily

Before we do anything lets back it up just in case.

sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.backup

Now open the file with root privilages in a text editor

gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

then alter the first couple of lines so it looks like this:

#deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.04.1 _Hardy Heron_ - Release amd64 (20080702.1)]/ hardy main restricted
# See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to

Make sure you have that # at the start of the line.

Then save the file, and try your package manager again.

Hi, thank you for your message, now you have lost me, as I cant see where I'm supposed to change the lines, if I copy the file here, can you change them, then I'll copy it back, hope you dont me asking.

Its 5am here and I've not been to bed, so I dont want to mess it up again.

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.listgksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.listdeb cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.04.1 _Hardy Heron_ - Release amd64 (20080702.1)]/ hardy main restricted

No problem,

Basically, you need to delete "gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.listgksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" from the start of the file, and then add a #

so your entire sources.list file should read:

# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.04.1 _Hardy Heron_ - Release amd64 (20080702.1)]/ hardy main restricted
# See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to
# newer versions of the distribution.
