You can do that with compiz.

short answer is no, gnome doesn't support it
I think Kubuntu (KDE) does and so does Enlightenment

Sure but you give up your icons and have to use a non supported plugin... great compromise

Just update to the newest compiz fusion version.
It is true you dont have desktop icons.
I find then more annoying than useful.

However there is a program called wallpapoz that will give you different wallpapers without compiz fusion and you will keep the icons.
