Hi,

I was wondering whether there is a nice way to install the "Interactive Fiction" Games (here: http://www.ifcomp.org/comp05/games.php ) in Ubuntu?

It seems I have to install some interpreters (???????) first, then somehow install (?????) and play (??????) these games... The instructions in the major (?) howto site (here: http://brasslantern.org/players/software/linuxinterps.html ) scared the HEEEELLL out of me!

Could someone (preferably familiar with these games) help me? Maybe these games can help me learn english and escape from the graphical hell of Windows and/or 3D games.

Thanks :)

Fire up synaptic and make a search for the name of the program you need instead. :)

For instance, search for "tads", and you get a list of possible matches. I'm guessing you want "tads3" from reading the descriptions. Searching for "frotz" I find both frotz and xzip.

And so on. Many of these probably is available in this way. I'm sorry I'm not more familiar with them so I can help with the actual usage or recommend which ones you want. But it's a start. :)

You'll need Frotz (I think it's in the repos) to play any Z-Machine files (end in .z or .z#).

Most IF games come in Z format, so Frotz should handle most files you find.

For TADS games, if you want a graphical interpreter, try qtads.

thank you all so much for the replies.

I'll try all these once I get back home.
