Firestarter is not a firewall. Only a tool to configure the firewall, iptables. I have iptables, with no rules, and don't use anti-virus because Linux doesn't get Windows viruses.

The only reason I use a firewall (iptables) besides the hardware firewall/router is to filter outgoing connections since most users on the network are only allowed to visit only a handful of websites. The only antivirus I use is on the mail server, since I don't allow windows users to run anything I haven't whitelisted.

On my personal and work computer, there is no need for either.

Just a router with one computer in DMZ mode, that computer has no iptables rules or anti-virus. It's just running ssh and teamspeak/ventrillo.

On my main desktop I do have clamav which is scripted to check if my Download folder has changed, then scan it and put all clean files into a media folder which is shared with 3 other Windows computers.

It's mostly p2p content which goes there and is pretty prone to have viruses (so is it virii or viruses anyways)
