View Full Version : [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Problem installing screenlets( in .tar.gz files)
September 11th, 2008, 08:23 PM
I have downloaded two files (81694-NVidia_v0.5.tar.gz and another file ending .tar.bz2)
I have gone through the posts but I couldn't find a method which I could handle comfortably, in short I failed miserably.
I have downloaded to my Desktop and extracted in the Desktop.
What is "cd" and I do not understand when people say "make cd"or similar to that.
Could someone please help me with step by step procedure. TIA.

cd = change directory

Hi john, Thank you for the reply, could you please help me a bit further.
I followed this instructions from another post:
sudo apt-get install build-essential checkinstall
To install it you would need to extract
tar -zxvf filename
change to directory then start to compile
sudo make checkinstall
I am stuck at the "change to directory then start to compile" instruction.
do I just put "cd" in Terminal and press enter or "cd ~./configure
sudo make chekinstall.
Thanks for the help.

sudo make checkinstall
cd ~/Desktop takes you to /home/<user>/Desktop.
Edit: if it's in a folder on the desktop (I will use package as an example) then you type
cd ~/Desktop/package. It is case sensitive by the way so be careful.

It doesn't look like you've changed directory to the desktop as advised. Try:
in the terminal before running that tar command.

why would you compile screenlets? 0.1.2 is here: http://www.getdeb.net/app/Screenlets
You download the 32-bit or 64-bit packages, double-click on them to install and that's it :)

bash: ./configure: No such file or directory
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
vignes@vignes-desktop:~/Desktop$ sudo make checkinstall
make: *** No rule to make target `checkinstall'. Stop.

Forgers advice may get this working faster, but should you wish to continue here...
You'll have to run the ./configure inside the directory that the tar command created. So try these in Terminal:
Then continue with the instructions you originally found :)

Hi Guys Thank you all for your help,I have managed to get this fixed by installing screenlets in Synaptics, then Alt+F2->gksudo nautilus->screenlets.
I have extracted tar.gz file to my Desktop and copied that to screenlets folder. I don't know whether this is the right way to do it but it works.
Thanks again to you all.

If it's working, don't question it ;) That's my take. Good to know all's well
