I've been playing with OpenSuse 10.3 for a few weeks now, and I'm liking it so far, apart from having to edit my resolv.conf file every start up! But the one thing I would like to do is be able to share files between the two distros. What I should have done is exanded my current /home partition and that would have solved the problem, but that's hindsight, perhaps when I purchase an external hd I'll do that, but for now I'd like to figure this one out. I looked at the partitioner tool in Opensuse and it had the option of a /local, if I choose this option for my ubuntu /home partition 1) will it screw the partition up and become unusable and 2) will I be able to share files using this method? i.e. will it be available automatically on boot in OpenSuse?

Or is there an easier and safer method?

In ubuntu you can simply access the media and you will found the root partition of openSUSE.

In openSUSE you can just type media:/ in konqueror if you use KDE. for GNOME, the operation should be the same as ubuntu.
