No idea how I didn't find a thread on this with the search. But I've got GNOME installed and it's my first time, I've previously used KDE a few times but it was a few years ago and don't notice a huge difference. Is either one actually better? Or is it better based on needs? My box will be mostly for web surfing and low end media, need to know if I should switch.

Linus Torvalds, the godfather, prefers KDE. (http://mail.gnome.org/archives/usability/2005-December/msg00021.html) Personally, I prefer gnome, but I haven't gone all-out with KDE, so it's not exactly a fair comparison. My main reason for sticking with gnome is that I generally seem to prefer gnome-based apps over KDE counterparts.

I think what's most important is how you use it, and ensuring that it does everything you want it to in an easy fashion. I'm not sure there's much difference, overall.

Hi,
back in the old days I started with knoppix which came with KDE. So when I installed openSuSE I went for the KDE desktop.

After some testing with Kubuntu I had to admit to myself that Gnome would be better for me.

Why? I saw me fiddling with all these wonderful settings and options in KDE and I never got to the point where I simply use the desktop and its programs.
So since Ubuntu Feisty I use the Gnome desktop and I am happy :)

BTW: I use Amarok and other KDE apps as well, by now I had no problems with this on Gnome

I started off on KDE back in the days of mandrake and redhat however I much prefer GNOME now and is all I would run.

I did give KDE another try a while back but have to say its definitely not for me

these days I am a gnome person as KDE4 hasnt really impressed me, and KDE3 is becoming less supported.

All of the gnome vs. KDE threads are in the Recurring Discussions forum:

Kde , gnome. Just try them both .love them both and pick kde :-P . No just kidding pick the one you can work best with. But on a gnome centric forum you will get lots of gnome advice but better to try them both and pick one, base your choice on someones judgement isn't good because they have different needs and views then you have/need
