Im running 8.04 Hardy Heron with gnome. I wat to be able to edit the color scheme. When I got to Menu> Prefrences> Appearance> and go to the Theme Customization and click on the Colors tab it tell me The current controls theme does not support color schemes.

What am I missing that will enable me to adjust that.

This happened with me also once.
I think you are using a theme you downloaded from the internet that does not support color change(atleast that was the case with me).
I guess you can't help it - the color scheme will remain the same (Unless ofcourse someone here points us to a solution).

Actually, no matter what theme, including the ones that came with the cd by default, I am not able to change it.

try installing this

sudo apt-get install gnome-color-chooser
and than go to

System -> Preference -> Color chooser

and than change the color as required.
