What do you think?

I figure they will go with a K now, but I can't think up anything right now :(

From this page there's only kangaroo and koala: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animal_names

Don't think that really fits with Ubuntu's African theme.

Why would you go with Killer Komodo, when you could go with Killer Koala? All the power of a killer in a cuddly, user friendly, Koala package. (Yes, I know koala will tear your eyes out and mess you up in real life.)

Don't you mean Dangerous Dropbear? ;)

Anyway, I think that we should skip K. KDE already used up most of the K stuff anyway. :p

What about a Kicking Koala?

If you name a release Killing, it *must* be absolutely killing and making the move to a 30%+ market share on OS's or something; although I and many more would really love that, it is not (yet) realistic. Keep the Killing for when it would really start killing m$ :-)

At this/that moment Linux/Ubuntu is really kicking the goliath, but it's still cute & small (Koala), which is not a bad thing since we're growing & maturing!

Just throwing this out there, anyone for Kinky Kitten?

Seriously, how many heads do you think would turn if you said you were running Kinky Kitten?

Kommunist Kangaroo

I don't know what my obsession with spelling Communist with a 'K' is about, but I like it

Not applicable for the next version but in 6 years or so from now when we get around to the W's I'd like to see ubuntu named
windows washer
as the last remaining 10% of hardcore windows users are finally forced to install linux in order to run the most recent and up to date applications. (c;

My personal favorite choice for the 9.10 release is Kleptomaniacal Kookaburra. In the spirit of having easy finals tomorrow, I just wrote a Ruby script to generate names for 9.10. I call it 910.rb. I'm pretty sure I did this a long time ago, but I can't find the topic it was in. Anyway, it will ask you how many names you'd like and then it'll generate that many names. Hope you enjoy it!
Example output:
$ ruby 910.rb
How many names would you like?
3
Kaleidoscopic Komodo
Kingly Koi
Kinetic Kodkod
Script:
ka = %w(katie kafkaewque kaleidoscopic kamikaze kanny karmic kayoed keeking keen keepable kempy khaki kicking kicky killer kilted kind kindhearted kingly klutzy kinetic king-sized kinky kissable kissy kitschy kleptomaniacal knavish knightly knobby knotty kooky kurt kvetching)
kn = %w(kittie kakapo kalong kangaroo kaydid kea kelpie kestrel kid killdeer kingfisher kinkajou kite kitten kittiwake kittyhawk kiwi knight koala kodkod kodiak koi komodo kookaburra kouprey kowari kudu kraut)
puts "How many names would you like?"
ip = gets.chomp.to_i
ip.times do
puts "#{ka[rand(ka.length)].capitalize} #{kn[rand(kn.length)].capitalize}"
end

Another one I just thought of would be
keyotic keyotay (kee-aw-tik kee-yo-tay)
I'll admit this I like this name simply because of my nick and fondness for don quixote and wouldn't really fit very well.

don't you all guys think kolibri sounds more catchy...
it's one and only bird that suck honey from flower. it could fly forward and backward, having a very quick wing that move like a bee...
it's some kind of hummingbird (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummingbird)
i guess it's time not to scare people using monstrous name like komodo etc, but how if we try something light and quick just like ubuntu... it light and fast on my laptop, maybe it's codename should be light and fast too. and on the developmentcodenames (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DevelopmentCodeNames) i saw kooky (http://www.answers.com/kooky) that mean strange or even crazy...

so i suggest kooky kolibri... people may call us strange, even crazy, but we are so light and fast...

Don't forget, it is an African animal they are looking for, and I can only think of one: Kudu

harindrawisnu
February 5th, 2009, 06:37 PM
well, you can see few species of hummingbird like kolibri live on africa... read the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummingbird) or maybe you can read this (http://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Auk/v083n01/p0126-p0128.pdf)

Nothing screams African (even South African) like a kudu.
I would put a keen in front of it, because the kudu knows what it's doing. I would advocate the use of more African animals not only to educate the world that Africa ain't a country and also to maintain the wonderful heritage behind Ubuntu.

Keen Kudu. It just works.
Short, sweet, and to the point.

Good thread,
I was wondering who is giving the names to new Ubuntu releases, well of course its users.. almost forgot it is an open-source community :)

so what about?

Karmic Kinkajou

for those who had never met this guy before:

They've already decided it will be the Karmic Koala (http://fridge.ubuntu.com/node/1831). I think Mark Shuttleworth decides on the name but gets community input from here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DevelopmentCodeNames).
