View Full Version : [ubuntu] How to choose partition sizes for manual install of ubuntu 8.04.1?

I need to install Hardy Heron 8.04.1 LTS ASAP on my Acer Aspire desktop PC, bought this past Christmas. It has 2GB of RAM and a single 160GB SATA hard drive.

To give myself more control at the point where I am asked how I want to partition my hard drive, I choose "Manual" and see a Partition Table show up with a drop-down list arrow that doesn't list any swap partition??!! :-s:? So, what's going on here? There are literally about ten other partiton types listed, so how can there be no swap one listed to choose? Is this Ubuntu's way of telling me it isn't an option or needed? As a complete newbie, I thought you always wanted a swap partition installed. What's also confusing is all the different opinions on what size a swap partition should be or IF it is even needed!

So, if anybody can help me straighten some of this out, I'd greatly appreciate it! :):) Am glad to be a member of this community.

Click on the free space and select "Create new partition".
Select "Logical" then "Swap" and set the size to whatever you want.
