It's a mythical animal.

Personally, I think the name is ridiculous.

I'd have preferred something like Jiving Jackal. :p

I love it really. The previous names seemed a bit weak and pathetic. I mean if you knew nothing about computers at all, and someone said in the board room, we need to install an OS and distro. We have a choice between "XP" and "daper drake", the boss would think daper drake was a kids version. At least Jaunty Jackalope appeals to adults as well cos it is funny. I do think ubuntu is going to enter e new era of popularity and grow very rapidly. Definately this version will be a time to see if it gets accepted by a much broader community. jaunty Jackalope sticks in my head worse than a Kylie Minogue record too, so should attract attention.

Coming from the southwestern USA, I have to love it. Jackalope is an awesome animal.

I like the name. There's really no such animal, right?

According to someone in the intrepidforum, a real "jackalope" is a deformed rabbit suffering from [sometimes fatal] "antler-like" tumors caused by a Shope papillomavirus infection.

Sounds nice :)

I also like the name - gives the release a "galloping" characteristic :)

We have a choice between "XP" and "daper drake", the boss would think daper drake was a kids version.

It's a codename - Windows XP's codename was Whistler, Trainyard and Springboard (among others (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_codenames#Windows_NT_family), depending on the actual version), you compare that to Dapper Drake :)
The official release is with the numbers: Ubuntu 6.06

But it's not that nice if you consider the words "tumor" and "virus" :(

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080908-ubuntu-9-04-to-be-called-jaunty-jackalope.html

Mark Shuttleworth as quoted by Ars:

The Warrior Rabbit is our talisman as we move into a year where we can reasonably expect Ubuntu to ship on several million devices, to consumers who can reasonably expect the software experience to be comparable to those of the traditional big OSV's—Microsoft and Apple

and later:

Ubuntu 9.04 will be like a Jackalope, he claims, because it will be lightning fast and will converge desktop and web technologies to create a hybrid software experience.

Actually, you'd tell your boss that it's "Ubuntu 6.06". ;)

On second thoughts, considering that Windows Vista was once called "Longhorn" - a name which conjures some unprofessional images - "Jaunty Jackalope" sounds half-alright actually. :p

and if you install vista alongside ubuntu, in the grub menu it says: "Vista/Longhorn"

Well I don't like particularly like the jackalope, but its a name. I would have suggested Jaundiced Jackass for 9.04, but for some reason I suspect that wouldn't have been met with a welcoming response :p

I suffered from Jaundice few years ago so I wouldn't have welcomed it.

They are the stuff of legend out here, but still an odd choice.

On the lighter side, we did have our summer intern from Amherst believing in them:

I still have no clue what a "fawn" or "heron" is (some sort of bird judging from the default wallpaper).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heron

Herons are wading birds. They're also known as egrets and by other names. I know that the Great Blue Heron is common in the Midwest US.

Fawns are young dear, generally young does.

Jaunty Jackalope is such a cool name!

Is this the first Ubuntu name that is a mythical creature?

"Shuttleworth said Ubuntu 9.04 would focus on improving boot time..."

Is improving boot time excuse for something or... I don't get it. It's been on the top of the list of improvements of each Ubuntu release for years. Boot time is already fantastic and no energy should be put in improving it.

P.S.
I never liked the names, but I don't really care about them much.

The Lafayette College website has a good article on "jackalopes" (http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~hollidac/jacksforreal.html) with lots of pictures.

I think it's too many syllables.

Maybe it's just because I was really holding out for "Jaunty Jackass".

Have to disagree. Main computer I use is a laptop, and portables are increasingly used. Boot time is a significant part of the time used to do my work or surf internet or watch videos. Indeed I use my eee pc almost exclusively now or internet simply because it boots faster than my laptop. I'd be overjoyed if boot times are shorter. You can turn on a DVD player in less than 2 seconds. If you use your computer as multimedia also, its frustrating waiting a minute to boot in to watch an epidode of a program (e.g. 30mins long). Boot times would be one of my main priorities (and may encourage people to save energy by turning off their computers when not in use!)

lol, you're not wrong. I am sure that will add to the list of pseudonyms used here for windows i.e. winblows etc hmmm. Long-Horn. Must remember to ask my boss in an accusatory tone, 'did you insert long-horn on my mother-board, on my office desk-top!!?'

You can sometimes find stuffed jackalopes in the southwest tourist towns.

There used to be a show called "America's Funniest People" and Dave Coulier(Uncle Joey from "Full House") did the voice for a jackalope skit that was in every show.

"Fast as fast can be, you'll never catch me!"

Improving the boot time would be great (although I don't think I could get it under 25 seconds). Why? With hibernation and sleep mode not working on my machine, I always turn it off instead of putting it to sleep.

I've been hoping for a fix to the hibernation/sleep issue but hey, this is the next best thing. Next to canned bread!
