There wouldn't be so many if it was obvious which one was the best, now would there? ;)
I personally cannot use anything other than amarok, because my RKO (http://remix.kwed.org) and OCR (http://www.ocremix.org/) archives would clutter my artist listing to oblivion without various artist grouping.
Many others like Banshee, Rhythmbox, Quod Libet, or some others for music management.
For just playing of single audio files, there is of course VLC, but also some others, including some CLI options, if you wish. There are threads about them everywhere here.

since you have gnome desktop environment i recommend Exaile its much like Amarok (full library integration, album arts, lyrics, info .. bla bla :P) and its supported by gnome unlike Amarok where u have to get KDE header files to get it to work which will eat up your cpu !

How about a media player like Winamp?

Don't rule out the possibility of running a Windows media player through WINE. I do this with foobar2000
You need to be more clear with your intended use. Do you need support for video?, streaming? etc.
In terms of native Linux players, I recommend Exaile for music organization, Audacious for just playing music, or Mplayer for the total A/V experience.

There isn't one. They all suck. Songbird is my player of choice. That doesn't mean it doesn't suck -_-

I like Audacious. For videos I like mplayer (especially with gnome-mplayer).

Whats wrong with them? I only agree to the extent that I don't think there's anything as good as foobar2000, but Audacious is good enough for me. My real problem with most Linux music players is that for the majority of them, they don't have an equalizer or it just doesn't work (see bmpx and exaile).

When I wrote that, I was thinking in terms of music library managers. VLC is indeed a nice player for video.

I never had to use such things to manage media. Although I did use banshee once and found it had way more features than I needed.
For all media, I use VLC. Even when I am using not-my-computers: http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable

For me, one of my favorite media players is MPD. It has tons of frontends, too, and can be used without a window being open or a system tray spot being filled.

VLC 0.9.2 (for both audio and video)
Plays almost everything, including DVDs with menus, and on any OS. There's also a new WinCE port in the works, so I'll even be able to use VLC on my Pocket PC. And it has quite a few interfaces and output modes, is easy to configure, and looks great.
I can't support the "Amarok for music..." movement because Amarok requires gobs of KDE libraries, and I want a single unified application for my media viewing.

mplayer CLI <3 (it comes as default if you compile it yourself. GUI has to be enabled separately :)). The most configurable media player.

Thanks for the great replies!
I suggested using Winamp under WINE but noone has said anything.
Just so you can get an idea of what Im looking for I use Winamp for music and WMP for video (if it doesnt work in WMP, then I just use VLC)
So I would like a similar solution.

Hey
Whats the best software media player for Ubuntu (Linux)?
For video:
vlc media player.
I also like Totem (installed by default).
For audio:
depends on what you want.
I use Exaile myself.
I also use mpd + mpc/sonata but I don't think a lot of people will like that setup.

You migt want to give audacious a try if you like winamp.
You can use all winamp skins in audacious.

I find Amarok and Banshee completely useless and utter crap.
Of course, that's just my opinion.
I prefer Songbird and Rhythmbox.

There is no best media player it's just a matter of personal opinion. As in my opinion I prefer Songbird because of it's improved performance over all the other media players I've tried and it gives me what I need: Ipod support, last fm, and various other plugins. Is it perfect no, I've had mixed results with it on different OS's although usually 99% of the time a simple solution is all that's needed to fix the problem for me. It's a great media player for those ex winamp users.

We have Amarok too, and also a GTK version, Exaile (though it's not quite as developed)

I tried Songbird 1.0 and it really has changed for the better. The only thing I miss is support for multimedia keys under Gnome. Seems this version broke an old plugin that made them work.
But Rhythmbox is pretty good too. Actually, I gave a try to Songbird again (I tried 0.4 before) while searching for something similar to Rhythmbox, but for Windows :)

I'm really of mixed minds when it comes to media players in Linux.
For many reasons, I still prefer iTunes.
I have tried Banshee and Rhythmbox (which suck the least IMHO, but still are nowhere near what I want), and I just can't stand Amarok, which is way over-complicated and simply not intuitive enough for my tastes.

Opinions change and Songbird 1.0 was a step backwards for me and instead I've discovered mpd + Ario.
