On my next build I would like to get aquainted with Linux.
Could someone explain the differences between Ubuntu and PCLinux Gnome 2008. Is one better than the other? etc.
Some people seem to favor PCLinux Gnome 2008.

Thanks in advance

Most major distros are stable and easy to use. Since this is an Ubuntu forum, you are probably going to hear that people favor Ubuntu.

I have used PClinuxOS and did not care for it. It looks nice, but it ran a little slower on my hardware, and since I was use to Ubuntu, I did not find PCLinux as intuitive as some might.

I also feel that Ubuntu feels more Linux-like than PClinuxOSs, which tries to be more like Windows (at least the KDE version does). So, if you want to get a good feel for Linux, Ubuntu might give you a better sense of what it is like.

However, either is a solid choice!

Chocolate or vanilla?

Coke or Pepsi?

Blondes or brunettes?

This is Linux, and it's all about choices :lolflag:

The other good part is that almost all distros are only a download away.
Or you can buy the discs, if your time or bandwidth is limited.
Sometimes the distros themselves sell copies (usually very cheaply, and this helps their bottom line)
Or you can but them at places such as OSDisc.com, which sells the CDs for an average of $2.
OSDisc also sells the entire Ubuntu Repository (on 5 DVDs) for $30.
Again, great for those who are limited in time or bandwidth.

Which is better? The best choice is to try them.
Ubunutu (and it's variants, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu) will have good support here.
PCLinux will have support in its own forums.

I have used several different ones.
Debian
SuSe
Mandriva (was Mandrake)
Puppy (small, and FAST!, great for older, limited mahcines)
PCLinux (including the mini-me version)
DSL (DamSmallLinux)
and others I cannot recall right now.

I subscribe to several magazines, and two come with monthly discs that have one or more distros on them, so I am exposed to a lot of choice.
I have one computer that I use just to play with these choices.

They all have strengths and weaknesses. Things I like, and did not like.

But they all have freedom, and that is what I love about them all.

I started on PCLinuxOS

It pretty much changed my life.
Very easy to use, did what I wanted, then I wanted more of a challenge and moved to Ubuntu. Id say give them both a try, see which you prefer, or try PCLinux in KDE as well to see what feels best for you.

I have had PclinuxOs 07 and 08 minime as a main distro and ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 as a main.

I must say both have their strong points.

I like PclinuxOs a bit better due too a few things though,
1. The default installed programs(it comes with anything you would need)
2. The default theme
3. The Control Panel(these thing made so many things easy)
4. Its hardware detection is great it detected every bit of my hardware except my wireless card which was in the package manger and easy to get.

Ubuntu I like due to-
1. The ease of use
2. Its varity of packages.
3.It uses .deb's instead of rpm's(I don't dislike rpm's i ust find them harder to use).
