A simple quick fix improves the look of firfox greatly.
make bitstream vera the default font. Go to edit>preferences>general>fonts & colors
where it says serif, change to 'Bitsteam Vera Serif'
where it says Sans-serif, change to 'Bitstream Vera Sans'
where it says monospace, change to 'Bitstream Vera Sans Mono'
You will see an improvement. I know people recommend installing the package "mscorettfonts". But that package makes extensive changes to your system. It puts Microsoft font everywhere. I think the Bitstream fonts are as good as or better than the Microsoft fonts. See for yourself
